Sharing Your Plex Server
One of the best features of running Plex on a seedbox is sharing with friends and family. They get their own Plex account with personalized watchlists, continue watching, and recommendations — while your seedbox does the serving, on a connection far faster than a home upload.
Plex Home vs. Friend Shares
Plex has two distinct sharing models, and picking the right one matters:
- Friend shares — the other person has their own free Plex account. You grant them access to specific libraries. This is the right choice for anyone outside your household: they manage their own login, and you can revoke access any time without affecting anything else.
- Plex Home — up to a handful of “managed users” under your account, with optional PINs. Designed for people in the same household (kids’ profiles with content restrictions). Managed users can’t take their watch history with them if they later get their own account, so don’t use Home for friends.
Inviting Users
- Open Plex Web → Settings → Users & Sharing
- Click Grant Library Access
- Enter the person’s email or Plex username
- Select which libraries to share (e.g., Movies yes, personal content no)
- Set restrictions: content rating limits, simultaneous streams, download permission
Share per-library, not everything by default. A common pattern on our fleet: share “Movies” and “TV” but keep a private library for content you don’t want in anyone else’s home screen. Users only ever see the libraries you tick.
Managing Streaming Quality
On a seedbox, bandwidth is effectively unlimited — the real constraint on shared plans is transcoding CPU. Every stream that isn’t Direct Play burns CPU that other users of the server (and other streams) need:
- Settings → Users → Click a user → Set maximum remote streaming quality
- Recommended on shared seedbox plans: “Original” (Direct Play) for everyone you trust to have decent bandwidth — counter-intuitively, the highest setting is the lightest on the server, because no transcoding happens
- Only cap users to “1080p 10 Mbps” or lower if their connection genuinely can’t handle originals — and know that this forces a transcode

Auditing and Revoking Access
Review Settings → Users & Sharing occasionally. Removing a user takes effect immediately, ends their sessions, and doesn’t disturb your library or other shares. If you’d rather limit than remove, reduce their simultaneous-stream allowance first — one stream per casual user is a sensible default on shared plans.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can I share my Plex server with?
Plex doesn’t hard-cap friend shares, but your plan’s CPU does. On shared seedbox plans, keep concurrent streams modest and favor Direct Play; if your circle regularly streams 3+ transcodes at once, a dedicated plan is the honest answer — see plans and pricing.
Do the people I share with need Plex Pass?
No. A free Plex account is enough to watch shared libraries. Plex Pass on your account adds extras like downloads for shared users and hardware transcoding (relevant on dedicated servers).
Can shared users delete or modify my files?
No. Library shares are read-only — friends can watch, rate, and build their own watchlists, but they cannot delete media or change your server settings. Only admin-level access (your account) can do that.
Why do my friends’ streams buffer when mine are fine?
Usually their stream is being transcoded (low quality cap, incompatible client, or subtitles burning in) while yours Direct Plays. Raise their maximum quality to Original, or fix the trigger — details in Plex server performance.
