Installing evoftp on Windows

By the end of this page evoftp is running on your Windows 10 or 11 PC (64-bit) and ready to open the connection file from your client area. There is no setup wizard: evoftp for Windows is a single portable .exe that runs from wherever you put it.

Downloading and placing the file

  1. Download evoftp-windows.exe from the evoftp downloads folder.
  2. Move it somewhere permanent, for example C:\Tools\evoftp.exe or your Documents folder.

Pick the location with care. On first launch evoftp registers itself as the program for .evoftp files and evoftp:// links, and that registration points at the file’s current path. If you leave it in Downloads and later clear that folder, double-clicking a connection file will do nothing. If you do move the exe later, run it once from the new location to re-register.

Getting past SmartScreen

  1. Double-click evoftp.exe.
  2. Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway.

The warning appears because evoftp is new and not yet code-signed; it only appears the first time. Windows Defender or another antivirus may also take a few seconds to scan a freshly downloaded, unsigned program before it opens. That is normal. The source code is public under the GPL-3.0, so you can read it or build it yourself.

What happens on first run

evoftp opens with an empty sidebar and registers two things for your user account only (no administrator rights, nothing system-wide):

  • .evoftp files — the connection file from your client area now opens straight into the app.
  • evoftp:// links — a link of that form opens the app and adds the server.

Saved servers and settings live in %APPDATA%\evoftp. Saved passwords in that folder are encrypted with your Windows login (DPAPI), so another user on the same PC cannot read them.

Note: There is no uninstaller. To remove evoftp, delete the exe and, if you want a clean slate, the %APPDATA%\evoftp folder.

Updating

evoftp checks for a new version each time it starts. When one exists, choose Download in the dialog, then replace the old exe with the new one in the same folder; your servers and settings are kept.
