Why Naming Matters
Your Plex server name appears in the Plex app on all devices. A clear name helps you (and anyone you share with) identify which server to use — especially if you have multiple servers or share with friends who have their own.
On a seedbox this is worth two minutes of your time: a freshly installed Plex server defaults its friendly name to the machine’s hostname, and seedbox hostnames are infrastructure labels, not names humans pick. Your friends end up choosing between “bob’s server” and something like alexa or hormuz in their server list — rename it before you start sharing libraries.
How to Change the Server Name
- Open Plex Web → Settings → General
- Change Friendly name to something descriptive (e.g., “My Seedbox”, “Evoseedbox Media”)
- Click Save
The change is instant and propagates to every signed-in client the next time it refreshes its server list. Nothing needs to be restarted.
What Renaming Does NOT Affect
The friendly name is a display label only. Changing it does not:
- Break existing library shares — friends keep access under the new name
- Touch watch history, playback progress, or watchlists
- Change your server’s address, ports, or secure connection settings
- Require re-claiming the server or re-scanning libraries
So there’s no migration risk — rename freely.
Naming Best Practices
- Keep it short and recognizable
- Avoid special characters (some Plex clients handle them poorly)
- If sharing, use a name others will recognize (not “localhost” or “seedbox123”)
- If you run more than one server (say, a seedbox plus a home NAS), encode the location: “Media (Seedbox)” vs “Media (Home)” — this saves every future “which server do I pick?” question from your users
Frequently Asked Questions
Will renaming my Plex server log anyone out or break shares?
No. The friendly name is cosmetic. Shares, sessions, watch history, and settings all survive a rename — clients simply show the new name on their next refresh.
Why does my seedbox Plex server have a strange default name?
Plex uses the machine’s hostname as the initial friendly name, and on a seedbox that’s the provider’s server hostname. It’s expected — just change it in Settings → General.
Can I use the same name on two Plex servers?
Plex won’t stop you, but don’t — clients list servers by friendly name, so duplicates make it a coin-flip which one you (or your friends) open. Give each server a distinct name.
