Torrent Seeding Rules and Upload Limits Explained

4 min read

Confused about why some of your torrents stop seeding automatically? Or why your upload speed gets throttled? This guide explains how seeding rules, upload limits, and torrent management work on your EvoSeedbox — so you know exactly what to expect and how to stay in good standing with your private trackers.

How Seeding Works on EvoSeedbox #

Your seedbox handles public and private torrents differently. Understanding this distinction is key:

  PUBLIC vs PRIVATE TORRENTS
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  PUBLIC TORRENTS PRIVATE TORRENTS
(1337x, RARBG, etc.) (IPTorrents, TL, etc.)

  ┌──────────────────────┐ ┌──────────────────────┐

  │ completion │ │ you want │
  │ │ │ │
  │ Dead torrents │ │ No automatic │

  │ │ │ Your ratio matters │
  │ Saves bandwidth │ │ — keep seeding! │
  │ for your real needs │ │ │

The Three Layers of Torrent Management #

Your seedbox has three systems that work together to manage torrents. Here’s how they interact:

  TORRENT MANAGEMENT STACK
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Priority System What It Does
  ──────── ────── ────────────

  HIGHEST ┌─────────────────┐
│ Public Torrent │ Stops completed public
│ Limiter │ torrents every minute.
│ (plimits) │ Stops dead public
           │ │ torrents (0 seeds, 10min).
           └────────┬────────┘
                    │
  MEDIUM ┌────────▼────────┐
│ Monthly Upload │ Tracks your monthly
│ Limit │ upload. Throttles speed
           │ │ when approaching cap.
           └────────┬────────┘
                    │
  LOWEST ┌────────▼────────┐
           │ Upload Speed │ Per-connection upload
│ Hooks │ speed limits per plan.
           └─────────────────┘

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Higher priority systems override lower ones. │
│ Private torrents skip the top layer entirely. │
  └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Public Torrent Rules (plimits) #

The public torrent limiter runs every minute and applies these rules automatically:

  PUBLIC TORRENT LIFECYCLE
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Torrent added (public tracker)
       │
       ▼
  ┌─────────────────────────┐
│ Downloading... │ Normal download speed
  │ Status: Active │ No restrictions ✓
  └─────────┬───────────────┘
            │
       Completed
            │
            ▼
  ┌─────────────────────────┐
  │ Auto-STOPPED │ Stops seeding
  │ within 1 minute │ immediately after
  │ │ completion
  └─────────────────────────┘

  DEAD TORRENT DETECTION
  ──────────────────────

Torrent added (public) + 0 seeds available
       │
       ▼
  ┌─────────────────────────┐
│ Downloading... │ Trying to find peers
  │ Seeds: 0 │
  └─────────┬───────────────┘
            │
10 minutes pass, still 0 seeds
            │
            ▼
  ┌─────────────────────────┐
  │ Auto-STOPPED │ Dead torrent,
│ "No seeds available" │ no point waiting
  └─────────────────────────┘

Why does this exist? Public torrents have thousands of seeders — your individual seeding doesn’t matter. Stopping them frees up bandwidth and disk space for your private tracker torrents where ratio actually counts.

Monthly Upload Limits #

Each seedbox plan includes a monthly upload allowance. When you approach your limit, upload speed is gradually throttled:

  MONTHLY UPLOAD TRACKING
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Upload Used Action
  ─────────── ──────

  0% ─────── 80% Full speed ✓
                        No restrictions

  80% ────── 90% Slight throttle
                        Upload speed reduced

  90% ────── 100% Heavy throttle
                        Upload significantly slowed

  100% ───── Uploads near-stopped
                        Downloads still work ✓
                        Resets on billing date

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Downloads are NEVER affected by upload limits. │
│ You can always download at full speed. │
  └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Your monthly upload resets on your billing date. Check your current usage in the dashboard.

Private Tracker Best Practices #

Private trackers require you to maintain a good seed ratio. Here’s how to manage this on your seedbox:

  PRIVATE TRACKER STRATEGY
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ DO │
  │ ─── │
  │ ✅ Keep private torrents seeding │
  │ ✅ Seed until ratio ≥ 1.0 │
  │ ✅ Use ruTorrent's ratio column │
│ to track each torrent │
  │ ✅ Download popular new releases │
  │ (high demand = fast ratio) │
  └─────────────────────────────────────┘

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ DON'T │
  │ ───── │
  │ ❌ Hit-and-run (download then │
  │ immediately remove) │
  │ ❌ Seed public torrents instead │
│ of private (wasted bandwidth) │
│ ❌ Fill entire disk with public │
│ torrents (no room for private) │
  └─────────────────────────────────────┘

Checking Your Torrent Status in ruTorrent #

  ruTorrent STATUS INDICATORS
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Icon/Color Meaning Action
  ────────── ─────── ──────
  ▶ Green Downloading Normal
  ▶ Blue Seeding Active upload
  ⏸ Grey Paused/Stopped Manual or auto-stop
✕ Red Error Check disk space
⬇ Yellow Queued Waiting in line

  Useful columns to enable:
  • Ratio — Your upload/download ratio per torrent
  • Tracker — Shows if public or private
  • Seeds — Number of seeders available
  • Size — Disk space used by this torrent

Frequently Asked Questions #

Why did my torrent stop seeding? #

If it’s a public torrent, it was stopped automatically after completion. This is by design — public torrents don’t need your seedbox’s bandwidth. If it’s a private torrent, check if you accidentally paused it, hit your disk quota, or if your monthly upload limit was reached.

Can I keep public torrents seeding? #

The auto-stop rule runs every minute. If you restart a public torrent, it will be stopped again within a minute. This is a server-wide policy to ensure fair resource distribution.

Will auto-stop affect my private tracker ratio? #

No. Private tracker torrents are never auto-stopped. Only public tracker torrents are affected. Your private tracker seeding runs uninterrupted.

My upload speed seems slow. What’s happening? #

Check your monthly upload usage in the dashboard. If you’re above 80% of your monthly allowance, upload throttling kicks in. Your speed will return to normal when your billing cycle resets.

What counts as a “public” vs “private” torrent? #

This is determined by the tracker in the .torrent file. Private trackers set a “private” flag. Your seedbox detects this automatically — you don’t need to configure anything.
