Understanding Disk Usage and Quotas on Your Seedbox

5 min read

Running out of disk space is the most common issue seedbox users encounter. This guide explains how disk quotas work on your EvoSeedbox, how to check your usage, and how to free up space — so you can keep downloading without interruption.

How Disk Quotas Work #

  YOUR SEEDBOX DISK SPACE
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Total Server Disk: 12 TB (shared between users)

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ │
│ Your Quota Other Users │
  │ ┌──────────────┐ ┌─────────────────────────┐ │
  │ │ 1 TB │ │ Shared across │ │
  │ │ ████████░░ │ │ other accounts │ │
  │ │ Used: 800GB │ │ on this server │ │
  │ │ Free: 200GB │ │ │ │
  │ └──────────────┘ └─────────────────────────┘ │
  │ │
  └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Your quota is PRIVATE — other users can't use your space.
  ████ = Used ░░ = Free

Every seedbox plan has a disk quota — the maximum amount of storage you can use. This is dedicated to your account. Your quota depends on your plan:

  • Basic plans: 750 GB – 1 TB
  • Standard plans: 1.5 TB – 3 TB
  • Premium plans: 4 TB – 8 TB

Checking Your Disk Usage #

From the Client Area #

The easiest way to check your disk usage:

  1. Log in to client.evoseedbox.com
  2. Go to Services > click your seedbox plan
  3. Your disk usage is displayed as a bar graph with used/total values

From ruTorrent #

In ruTorrent, check the bottom status bar — it shows your disk usage as “Disk: X.XX GB / Y.YY GB”.

What Uses Your Disk Space? #

  DISK USAGE BREAKDOWN
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Typical seedbox usage:

  ┌───────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ ████████████████████████████░░░░░░░░░ │ Total Quota
  └───────────────────────────────────────┘

  ████████████████████ 65% Active torrents (seeding)
  ██████ 20% Completed downloads
███ 10% App data (Plex metadata,
  █ 5% Docker containers, configs)

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
  │ #1 space consumer: TORRENTS YOU'RE SEEDING │
│ Active torrents keep files on disk while seeding. │
│ Stop seeding = free space immediately. │
  └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

How to Free Up Space #

Method 1: Stop and Remove Seeding Torrents (Most Effective) #

Seeding torrents are the biggest space consumer. In ruTorrent:

  1. Sort torrents by size (click the “Size” column header)
  2. Right-click on large torrents you no longer need
  3. Select Remove and Delete Data

Important: “Remove” only removes the torrent from the list. “Remove and Delete Data” removes the torrent AND deletes the files from disk.

  REMOVING TORRENTS
  ═════════════════

  Right-click torrent in ruTorrent:

  ┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ Remove │ ◀── Removes from list only
│ │ (files stay on disk!)
│ Remove and Delete Data │ ◀── Removes torrent AND
  │ │ deletes files ✓
  └──────────────────────────────┘

⚠️ "Remove" alone does NOT free disk space!
✅ "Remove and Delete Data" frees disk space.

Method 2: Delete Files via Filegator #

If you have files that aren’t attached to torrents (e.g., manual uploads, extracted archives):

  1. Open Filegator or connect via FTP
  2. Navigate to your downloads folder
  3. Find large files or folders you no longer need
  4. Select and delete them

Method 3: Clean Up Docker App Data #

Apps like Plex store metadata and thumbnails that can grow over time. If you’ve uninstalled apps, their data may still be on disk. Contact support to clean up orphaned app data.

Automatic Seeding Rules #

Your seedbox has automatic rules that manage seeding to protect server resources:

  AUTOMATIC SEEDING MANAGEMENT
  ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════

  Rule 1: PUBLIC TORRENT LIMITS
  ─────────────────────────────
Public torrents (from public trackers) are automatically
stopped after completion to save bandwidth & disk.

  Your Torrent Auto-Action
  ──────────── ───────────
Public + Completed ────────────▶ Stopped (saves space)
  Public + 0 seeds + 10min ─────▶ Stopped (dead torrent)
  Private + Completed ──────────▶ Keeps seeding ✓

  Rule 2: UPLOAD LIMITS
  ─────────────────────
Monthly upload is capped per plan. Torrents may be
throttled if you approach your monthly limit.

  ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ These rules run automatically every minute. │
│ You don't need to configure anything. │
│ Private tracker torrents are NOT affected. │
  └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

What Happens When You Hit Your Quota #

  DISK QUOTA STATES
  ═════════════════

  0-90% Used Normal operation
  ────────────── Everything works fine ✓

  90-95% Used Warning zone
  ────────────── Consider cleaning up.
                    New downloads may slow.

  95-99% Used Critical
────────────── Some apps may have issues.
                    Clean up urgently.
                    rTorrent still runs ✓

  100% Used Full
  ────────────── New downloads will fail.
                    rTorrent can't write.
⚠️ Remove torrents to free space.

Your seedbox doesn’t stop running when you hit your quota — rTorrent keeps seeding existing torrents. But new downloads will fail because there’s nowhere to write the data. Free up space to resume downloading.

Troubleshooting #

“Disk Full” But I Deleted Files #

Symptom: You deleted files but the dashboard still shows full.

  • Check the trash: If you used Filegator, files might be in a trash/recycle bin. Empty it
  • Remove AND delete data: In ruTorrent, make sure you used “Remove and Delete Data”, not just “Remove”
  • Wait for update: Disk usage stats refresh periodically. Wait a few minutes and check again
  • Hidden files: Extracted archives, sample files, and .nfo files add up. Check with Filegator

Torrents Showing Red / Not Downloading #

Symptom: New torrents show errors or won’t start downloading.

  • Check your disk usage — this is almost always a full disk
  • Free up space by removing old seeding torrents
  • After freeing space, right-click the errored torrent and select Start

Can’t Upload to Filegator #

Upload failures are often caused by hitting your disk quota. Check your usage first.

Tips for Managing Space #

  • Download, grab, delete — Download the torrent, transfer files to your PC via FTP, then remove and delete the torrent
  • Sort by size regularly — In ruTorrent, sort by size to find the biggest space consumers
  • Avoid hoarding — It’s tempting to seed everything forever, but disk space is finite. Keep what matters
  • Use Rclone for archiving — Set up Rclone to automatically move completed downloads to Google Drive
  • Check completed ratio — If you’ve seeded a torrent to 2.0+ ratio, you’ve contributed more than you took. Safe to remove
  • Private trackers first — If you need to free space, remove public torrents first. Private tracker ratio matters more

Need More Space? #

If you consistently run out of space, consider upgrading your plan. Higher plans offer more storage and bandwidth. You can upgrade anytime from your client area without losing your data.
