Understanding Quality Profiles

Quality profiles in Sonarr and Radarr determine which release qualities are acceptable and which are preferred. Setting these correctly ensures you get the best quality without filling your seedbox storage with unnecessarily large files.

Recommended Quality Profiles

For Most Users: HD-1080p Profile

Quality Min Size Max Size Preferred
Bluray-1080p 3 GB 15 GB Yes (top)
WEB-DL 1080p 2 GB 10 GB Yes
HDTV-1080p 1.5 GB 8 GB Acceptable
Bluray-720p 1 GB 5 GB Acceptable
WEB-DL 720p 0.5 GB 3 GB Acceptable

For 4K: UHD Profile

Quality Min Size Max Size Notes
Bluray-2160p Remux 30 GB 100 GB Best quality, huge files
Bluray-2160p 15 GB 60 GB Excellent quality
WEB-DL 2160p 8 GB 30 GB Good for streaming

Storage warning: 4K content uses 5-10x more storage than 1080p. A single 4K Remux movie can be 60-80 GB. Ensure your seedbox plan has enough storage.

Custom Formats (Radarr v3+)

Custom Formats let you prefer or avoid specific release attributes:

  • Prefer: x265/HEVC (smaller files), Atmos audio, HDR10+, Dolby Vision
  • Avoid: Cam recordings, Telecine, Telesync, hardcoded subtitles

Setting Up Dual Quality (1080p + 4K)

Many users want both 1080p (for mobile/casual viewing) and 4K (for home theater):

  1. Create two quality profiles: “HD-1080p” and “Ultra-HD”
  2. In Radarr, add the same movie twice — once with each profile
  3. Set different root folders: ~/media/Movies/ and ~/media/Movies-4K/
  4. Create separate Plex libraries for each
